Are most meals you eat homemade? If so, then you will be not only saving more money but will be eating healthier too. If finances are tight, then some studies have found that eating right at home is almost half the cost of dining out in most scenarios. The big problem though with eating out is the lack of portion control and the chefs choosing richer ingredients in favor of healthier ones. It has been confirmed by USA TODAY that people consume 50% more calories at restaurants than at home. And to make matters worse, most of these meals are fast food meals that are lacking vitamin-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. This prolonged lack of nutritious food certainly explains a link to numerous cancers.


Whether you are busy at school or at the workplace, healthy home-prepared meals might seem a bit optimistic. However, it can be done for you or your child quite easily. One possibility would be to pack a turkey sandwich on whole wheat or rye bread and some veggie sticks or an apple. If you want something sweet, pack a little bit of a dark chocolate bar or some trail mix. If you have a refrigerator at work, keep some yogurt or cottage cheese in there so that you can have that with some mixed nuts in the afternoon. This is simple, quick, tasty, AND definitely nutritious!


For dinner, make sure that about half of the plate is a vegetable or whole grain dish with the rest of the plate being some lean source of protein that is cooked appropriately. Appropriately, of course, means making the healthy choice of grilling with olive oil, baking, or pan frying with olive oil or some other kind of nutritious cooking oil. Eating home-prepared meals will not only slim down your credit card bills but your waistline too.
