"A Montana dietician recently told some university students and faculty that the bottom line of weight loss is really simple: just burn more calories than you take in. "I can put anyone on a 1,200 - 1,600 calorie-a-day diet and effect weight loss," she said. "If you assume a 500 calorie deficit a day, you're going to lose about a pound a week." I don't totally agree. I think some people's metabolisms are slow and it takes more for them to lose. While other people's metabolisms are high and they are skinny no matter what they eat.

Yeah, I'm not sure I can agree either. I've heard about people with
naturally occuring, genetic disorders in which their metabolisms
are just too slow.

I think weight is part nature and part nurture. You are responsible for what you eat, but your genetics and the way you grew up also play a role.

Nearly everyone in my family is overweight--I blame mine on genetic partly and mainly because I grew up eating the wrong stuff. Being from a large family we ate what we could afford which was alot of carbs! Potatoes-fried in lard, macaroni, and almost all our meat was fried. I dont think Mom ever roasted a chicken-fry it up and have some potatoes and cream gravy, corn, rolls dripping with butter, followed up by peach cobbler with a scoop of ice cream not to mention the deviled eggs and other side dishes! It is really hard to think of a salad as a meal when you are used to so much more.

I know where you're coming from, Cyn. Lol it's funny thinking back.
My dad is Scottish, and born a bit before WWII. He was dirt poor
so they ate fried bread, potted meat, and almost anything they
could get their hands on. Almost everything was high in fat content
and carbohydrates.

So, he passed that along to our family by cooking alot of steaks,
mashed potatoes, MEAT PIES (lol), fried biscuits or something,
and a lot more I've probably removed through selective memory.

I just don't like that stuff anymore. It's weird thinking back to
the days when I did.

I respect you for making such an effort after being mentally
and physically conditioned to want food like that.

Thanks Ian--I am trying! I was talking to my mom about this too--like the fact that veggies were never steamed and always had tons of butter. We ate canned veggies almost always unless it was home grown--I suppose to save money. I dont ever recall having frozen veggies. Now I only used canned when I am in a pinch and I never add butter. Salt is another issue--mom salted everything and I never use it much, unless it is absolutely a have to thing-and then I use salt substitute. OMG potted meat! Yes! I never ate it but we sure had it growing up--YUCK!
