Obesity in under-11s soars
By Maxine Frith, Social Affairs Correspondent

30 April 2005

More than a quarter of children aged between two and 10 are overweight or obese.

Weight problems among the under-11s have risen by 5 per cent in the past eight years and have more than doubled in two decades.

You know, this makes me think of the little girl whose parent's were having a yard sale that we stopped at this past weekend. She was so cute, dark eyes, dark, totally curly hair, then I looked at her and realized she probably weighs as much as my 10 year old does, the problem being, she was only 4.

It made me sad to think that if she has a problem now, she probably will as she gets older as well.

I was actually worried about my son when he was around 10. He was chubby--but in the past few years I have stopped buying the junk food and now he is much taller and active in sports and is lean and mean at 13!

Most children do go through a chubby phase to a certain degree, then, just like your son, they outgrow it. Most times it is a while before a growth spurt, they will get chubby as their bodies are storing nutrients, fats, and etc. that they will need to grow properly. This is a normal body cycle. The problem occurs when children are morbidly obese, they remain that way because of inactivity and their having to much stuff stored for their body to use.

My big fear was my son was following my lead--all my bad habits and would go thru life obese and unhappy. Yet another great reason for me to change my life.

My opinion is that it is just going to continue to get worse as people are trying to eat food that is 'CONVIENCE FOOD'.

There is all kinds of crap in there like High Fructose Corn Syrup, Saturated Fat and Transfat!

Our society need to get back to making things from scratch at home, but no one has the time to do it! :???:

For me it is not the time to do it, I have plenty of that, it is that I can't stand there with my spinal condition and do it. However, by carefully reading labels, I can still control how much junk my son gets.
