I step on the scale 3-4 times through the week and each time, it's under nearly the same circumstances as the previous (I've had exactly the same food choices and amounts, wearing the same amount of clothes, use the same scale, etc). I don't pay a lot of attention to it because the scale is a bad indication of gains or losses. How the clothes are fitting, looking in the mirror, and having body fat checked is much better.
