I used to be very opinionated on this subject.
I went to the dr at 275 lbs and had lost 17 lbs just to go in and not be "embarrassed" about stepping on the scale even though I never looked at the #'s lol I would NOT look at the option of medication when my new pcp brought it up in Jan 2006.
I told her I wanted to have Gastric Lap Banding because it was not as invasive as Bypass. I went to a seminar, did tons of research and joined several forums and groups here in my area to find out the real deal about the surgery. For 6 months; I had surgery scheduled and adhered to what my dr told me about pre-surgery and following everything he said.
Surgery is NOT a "quick fix", yes it does the majority of the work for you, depending on what you have done, but you still have food choices to make. If you eat the wrong things or too much of anything - you get really really sick or "cough up" hairball type things like cats do lol
With Lap Banding, it does the same thing that Phen/Adipex does - it helps "control" your appetite...literally and you can eat and drink normal if you try and
sometimes it does not do a thing for you - believe it or not some people do not lose weight.

Gastric bypass; you have no choice - they re-route your stomach basically and there are all kinds of side effects from that. I have a friend who had this done about 8 years ago, she lost 115 lbs and almost all of her hair from malnutrition. After she reached her goal weight, she kept losing and was hospitalized. She did then and still does have excess skin and looks 10-15 yrs older from the fast, dramatic
weight loss.
Would you believe the amount of people who have Lap Band surgery have already been on
Phentermine/Adipex and some more than 1 time? Some GLB'ers even have had to have surgery AGAIN! sure there's only 3-5 scars and a limited amount of pain after, but that another $15,000 to pay, plus fills and then barring any problems (insurance wont pay for these most of the time) you may have to have something else done.
There is no "easy cure" "quick fix" or "easy way out", and unlike Phen, a doctor will not do the GLB if you want to lose less than 50 lb of what your normal weight
should be.
Whichever "tool" we chose to lose weight and get healthy should be utilized to the fullest. Im just glad one of the "Banders" told me about Phen when my pcp asked and I chose to go this path instead of surgery - now that just seems the wrong decision for my goals.
