I think weight loss is all on your state of mind. I mean if you think well I will try this and see if it works, wrong you are setting yourself up to fail. You have to start with I am gonna do it, I am gonna lose this weight and nothing is gonna stop me.

As far as surgery goes, I think of the beautiful gal who has had umpteen surgeries to look like a Barbie doll!? And I've seen women with nice round fannies get buttock implants to look more like J Lo. I've seen men get calf implants to look igger there....hmmm..
Have any of ya'll seen the cat-woman who keeps having surgeries to look like a cat?! How about Michael Jaskson? This kind of thing really frightens me, not only thnking about their motive but what kind of doctors would DO that??!

Surgery to save your life? YES. Surgery to get rid of 50 pounds of saggy skin? Yes. A procedure to fix a minor problem causing one to stumble? Okay... I think almost nobody has stomach surgery until they become almost desperate. It's up to all of us to support these folks; don't you agree?

Yes, Susan because just to be honest with you some people who has gastric surgery, this is their last option. A little saggy skin for a lot of serious health problems. Definitely a nice trade off because for some it is a matter of life and death. I do understand surgeries can be taken to the extreme and some even get addicted to it. Me, I am just a normal person and I don't want to look like a barbie or a cat but I would love some help with all these old stretch marks on my tummy but am too chicken to do anything about it. I tell hubby, these are my battle scars for my kids.

I used to be very opinionated on this subject.

I went to the dr at 275 lbs and had lost 17 lbs just to go in and not be "embarrassed" about stepping on the scale even though I never looked at the #'s lol I would NOT look at the option of medication when my new pcp brought it up in Jan 2006.

I told her I wanted to have Gastric Lap Banding because it was not as invasive as Bypass. I went to a seminar, did tons of research and joined several forums and groups here in my area to find out the real deal about the surgery. For 6 months; I had surgery scheduled and adhered to what my dr told me about pre-surgery and following everything he said.

Surgery is NOT a "quick fix", yes it does the majority of the work for you, depending on what you have done, but you still have food choices to make. If you eat the wrong things or too much of anything - you get really really sick or "cough up" hairball type things like cats do lol

With Lap Banding, it does the same thing that Phen/Adipex does - it helps "control" your appetite...literally and you can eat and drink normal if you try and sometimes it does not do a thing for you - believe it or not some people do not lose weight.

go to http://www.lapbandtalk.com/ orwww.lapbandforum.com if you have any question about this

Gastric bypass; you have no choice - they re-route your stomach basically and there are all kinds of side effects from that. I have a friend who had this done about 8 years ago, she lost 115 lbs and almost all of her hair from malnutrition. After she reached her goal weight, she kept losing and was hospitalized. She did then and still does have excess skin and looks 10-15 yrs older from the fast, dramatic weight loss.

Would you believe the amount of people who have Lap Band surgery have already been on Phentermine/Adipex and some more than 1 time? Some GLB'ers even have had to have surgery AGAIN! sure there's only 3-5 scars and a limited amount of pain after, but that another $15,000 to pay, plus fills and then barring any problems (insurance wont pay for these most of the time) you may have to have something else done.

There is no "easy cure" "quick fix" or "easy way out", and unlike Phen, a doctor will not do the GLB if you want to lose less than 50 lb of what your normal weight
should be.

Whichever "tool" we chose to lose weight and get healthy should be utilized to the fullest. Im just glad one of the "Banders" told me about Phen when my pcp asked and I chose to go this path instead of surgery - now that just seems the wrong decision for my goals.

And I did forget to add:

It is possible to lose just as much as a GLB patient does, in the same amount of time with Phen/Adipex in the same amount of time. It just takes persistance and dedication.

Im not sure on GBP because I haven't done as much research or been a part of that community.

I was scheduled for it and then backed out.
I LOVE TO EAT.
Not only that, but SOOOOO many people I know who have had the surgery have gained it back.
Not that I'm a vain person, but the one thing that grosses me out the most is the way people look AFTER they have surgery. Sure, they are smaller- but they have bat wings, FUPAs, saggy boobs and a LOVELY scar right down the middle. I'd rather lose a bit more slowly so I have to time tone up as I go along, but most importantly learn how to eat. After all, surgery is NOT a frontal labotomy!!!!!!

I considered surgery. I had a good chat to my Doctor about all of the options available. The thing that put me off were the side affects.

Apart from being very overweight, i do not have any health issues. everything works as planned and i do not have heart or diabetes problems.

I mentioned this to the Doctor and she agree that unless you have a medical need, surgery can/will introduce health side affects that are not desirable in what is essentially a health person.

Regardless of whether you opt for unaided, drug, shake, supplement or surgical Weight loss , it's a lifestyle change at the end of the day. You have to be able to sustain the healthy living. For me, I just needed an energy boost and appetite suppressant so i could really have a good go at loosing those first 10's of pounds. It's up to me to work out healthy food choices, enjoyable exercise and good nutrition during the time I'm on the drugs.

I love to read these very words!! You are so right Aussie... you can lose weight however you want but until you make the necessary lifestyle changes, it's going to be short lived!
