Cottage cheese and protein shakes are my favorite midnight snack. Also guys, eliminating fat from your diet is not a good idea. It's best to keep your consumption of fat at 20% of your over all calories and let the fat come from fish oils, CLA, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. If we eliminate to much fat out of our system, our hormones become comprimsed in their ability to function plus our body will start to store things immediately as fat when it normally wouln't have.

Here are some facts about fat-
Makes up cell membranes and nerve fibers
Provides up to 70% of energy at rest
Cushions vital organs
Transports and stores fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E,k)
Preserves body heat

I like nuts as a snack too, but I have trouble sometimes only eating a 1 ounce serving.

Another thing I like is some celery with a spoonful of all natural peanut butter.

I was just about to say that strength. yes cottage cheese before bed will keep the metabolizm going throught the night, and as you know by now that will help burn more calories and fat. "but why cottage cheese?" good question well cottage cheese is dense in slow digesting/breakdown protein's and carbs.
The protein were talking about is called (casein) which digest between 2-7 houres and takes about 240 min for breakdown, which would also be the protein of choice when your talking about a night time shake. In a nutshell cottage cheese was accidently designed for night time snack.
obviously it's a dairy product which is well known for settling stomachs, and warm milk has been used to put people to sleep.
the carbs are of a medium GI (high GI is oatmeal, low is sugar) and when it's mixed with the casein it will slow it down even more, so the carbs end up acting like the casein.
so a Reduced Fat/fat free cottage cheese would be an excelent choice for night time snack.

This is going to sound a bit nutty but I put a teaspoon of barbeque sauce in mine to give it a tangy flavor.

For all of you cottage cheese haters out there-I'm willing to bet if you made yourself eat a bit every night you would start to like the flavor of it. I've had literally a dozen people that I've given this suggestion to because they swore they'd rather die than eat cottage cheese and guess what.....
they love the stuff now.
