Ok I just received my script from my PCP today (after weeks of struggling and stressing on where in the world to get a phen.) finally ended up in some medical weight loss center where I have to pay $45 a week!!

So now my physician whom I adore is always trying to lose weight too!! So he tells me you know with Phen. it only works when you "CLOSELY MONITOR WHAT YOU EAT" along with exercise. It's just a tool as we all now.

He just informed me that the FDA will be approving this new drug called Acomplia (Rimonabant) -- ANY DAY NOW!! I said yeah, like when pigs learn how to fly. He said no seriously this will revolutionize weight loss. He said he had expected it to be approved in January and that it's "on their desk". But there has been a three month extension. I guess for more research. You know the good 'ol nanny state" of the FDA. I said well make sure you tell me when it's on the market. He said believe me YOU WILL KNOW!! There will be a media blitz. It's made by Sanofi-Aventis. (Hmmm, perhaps I should get some stock in that company!!) It's already approved in Britain (and see I use to live in London! If I still lived there....damn) Anyway he said it works totally different to Phen. and is not a "controlled substance".

"It works by blocking endogenous cannabinoid binding to neuronal CB1 receptors. Activation of these receptors by endoegenous cannabinoids, such as anadamide, increases appetite. It is the most advanced endocannabinoid receptor antagonist in clinical development and offers a novel therapeutic approach to appetite control and weight reduction." He said that he has done extensive research on it and is the only drug out that that gives him a lot of promise.

Just some info if you would like to do some research on it yourself:

This is the latest on the Rimonabant as of March 26, 2007:

Wouldn't this be great!!

Nylon, it is so good to hear you are seeing your doctor and that he is monitoring everything. I am so glad because I know you are relieved.

When there is such buzz about a medicine as Acomplia, there is almost always a government sponsored Trial going on. That means they pay YOU to take it in most cases. It must be through a sponsoring doctor.
Because we are so close to a teaching medical school, I have been involved in many Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies. Steer clear of Phase 1.

Some of you may want to check out this link:

What are your thoughts on this new drug? My physician seems to be really keen on it. He says there no ther drug like it around. But OH MY GOD..........what would the FDA do? Would they really approve a drug like this? It might make the diet industry obsolete. The FDA couldn't let that happen. Money would be lost and we all know what a HUGE MONEY MAKING sector that is?

Possibly opening clinical trials for some of us!Acomplia News from April 2007 -- News About Rimonabant Competitor for Diet Drug Rimonabant (Acomplia) Now Has Name: Taranabant
While Sanofi's diet drug Rimonabant (Acomplia / Zimulti) remains stalled at the FDA, a potential competitor currently in phase III trials, Merck's MK-0364, now has an official generic name: Taranabant.
Taranabant is Merck's cannabinoid-1 (CB-1) receptor inverse agonist, and from reports we periodically receive from participants in the phase III trial of this diet drug, taranabant is as effective for weight loss as rimonabant with fewer side effects.
While Merck has not reported interim results from the phase III trial, which obviously could prove different from the anecdotal reports we receive, the company has said the pill was well tolerated in extensive phase II trials and that it plans to seek FDA approval for Taranabant next year.
Meanwhile Pfizer, which also has a CB-1 receptor antagonist in phase III trials, has as of yet not moved forward with a name for the diet drug known only as CP-945598.
Merck and Pfizer both will be watching intently the coming June FDA advisory panel meeting on rimonabant, which is expected to focus heavily on safety issues associated with this novel class of drugs that affect receptors in the brain.

Squeekie, I just don't know. Supplements, as you are probably aware, are not FDA regulated. Since this has been included in government sponsored clinical trials, I think it will not be available without one.

Search each of those medical names under:

ClinicalTrials.gov - Information on Clinical Trials and Human Research Studies

and

Clinical Connection Clinical Trials

If you are interested in a trial, where they pay you to try the meds, your doctor would have to get you involved OR you could go directly to the study partners, have a free physical by their doctors and be admitted anyway. They require that you not be involved in any other clinical trials at the same time. Shoot for Phase II and Phase III clinical Study drugs. Phase I is too much trial and error! We don't want ANY errors!!

GO FOR IT, GIRL!! Remember to carefully investigate the airline rules for bringing pills on board, though. They need to be separated in low numbers into clear baggies or some such silliness.

Wow! To just jet off to London!
