I was prescribed Adderall xr. I rather take phentermine vs adderall. Which is better for weight loss?

I am a little confused why it is so easy to get adderall xr which is a class 2 drug and impossible to get phentermine which is a class 4 drug!

I also have hypertension. while both are stimulants, wouldnt it be safer to take phentermine vs adderall?

My BP is controlled and normally 99/70

Hi, Kat. I remember your post from a good while back about losing 50 pounds. I know you are looking to lose again.
Taking both would be a bad overload. Can't change those brain chemicals to that degree without affecting your mood, focus, behavior, etc.

Both our adult kids have taken Adderall time release and each was warned by the pharmacist not to take other 'stimulants.'
Why don't you give you pharmacist a call and ask. Remember, it is NOT illegal to TAKE phentermine; it's illegal to purchase it without a prescription on the internet.

What I meant was wouldnt it be better to take phentermine over adderall? Phentermine IS a weight loss medication, adderall is not. Also adderall if 4 amphtermine salts. I realzie people do lose weight on adderall but not all of them do, whereas phentermine everyone loses weight.

I was just saying, since phentermine is a class 4 drug wouldnt it be wiser to take it vs adderall? Also with adderall i am scared to drink even on diet pepsi, on phentermine it never mattered.

I am not really heavy but I have been on IV steroids. I wil do those no more but they messed me up a little and it is very frustrating for me with the weight steroids put on. IV steroids 1000mg x 5 days. yikes! Not great for the waist line.

Hi again, Kat. If you take phentermine, ask your doc if you can try the 30 mg time-released kind. That, I think, should replace the ADHD meds. Any RN's here want to weigh in here on that?

The steroids shouldn't be stopped right away, in case you just finished those. And neither should an amphetamine-type drug. Make all moves off slowly. I'm sure the doc told you that.

I have bad RA and have taken 1,000 mg steroids for a week. I gained 15 pounds in a week!!!But it helped and when I slowed to 7.5 mg prednisone a day, all that weight left, too. My pharmacist said steroids can add up to 60 pounds in a MONTH!!

The Adderall is not for ADHD it's for fatigue. I have MS which is why I was on steroids. Even though nobody can tell I have MS, I do get severe fatigue. The steroids dont help much when you are tired and then they pack on pounds.

My neuro agreed about no more steroids, but I dont think he would prescribe phentermine ebcause it is a weight loss drug.

But I was pn phentermine in the past and i felt great and had lots of energy, also lost weight on it.

I do not feel comfortable on an amphetime, and my pcp said he doesnt have a lot of experience with adderall. he was supposed to monitor me while on it.

I think it would be difficult to get my doctor to prescribe phentermine over adderall.

I guess the phentermine might be better for you then. I know you have made a struggle to even get up and going with MS. I've always thought we each have something we have to 'manage' and sometimes it's hard to remember that.
Here's an option to look into:

I honestly think getting Adderrall might be so much easier has something to do with this total surge of over-prescription in the last few years.. seems like I know more than a few people taking/have taken adderall, including myself. When I was on it, I ate everything I normally did (just at a much lower consumption) I'm not sure why you were scared about d-p, though. The jitters maybe? My body naturally handles stimulants pretty well so I didn't usually get a lot of racing heartbeat/jitters/insomnia, stuff like that. ANYWAY, way off topic, when I was on adderall I did lose a bit of weight - weight, mind you, I put right back on once I stopped. It just worked like a (really, really awesome) appetite suppressant for me. My hunger was so minimal, I would just forget to eat some days & that, my friend, is something that has NEVER happened. And while phentermine is classified as a weight loss drug, I have heard of physicians prescribing low-dose adderall solely for weight loss (in certain circumstances of course.) I think it really depends on the doc's opinion of the whole thing. Don't give up on phentermine, maybe check into a second opinion with a physician elsewhere & see if they thinks phentermine's the best option.
