I have a very good elliptical, it is a NordicTrack brand and has a weight limit of 250-300 lbs.
At 430 it is going to be very difficult to use an elliptical, but they are in my opinion and this is supported by some studies, one of the BEST machines for burning calories. I do it for 45 minutes and burn 500 calories easy.
A treadmill is probably the best for his weight, a slow but steady and lengthy daily walk, easy on the joints, until he loses a bit and is ready for more challenging machine like the elliptical.
