I was reading some other posts about jogging each day to help lose the weight...I cant jog because about 14yrs ago I was in a car wreck and I messed up my knee pretty bad. So now when I walk for long periods, or jog, or exercise it hurts too much, feels like its gonna give out on me. Any advice?

Sure I have some advice. I always have opinions LOL.

First off, have you tried an ellyptical? They tend to be no impact which definitely helps! Or take a yoga class and build up your strength and flexibility over time. I completely can't do it but the people I know who can love it and they are in great shape.

Or if you can afford it, invest in a few sessions with a personal trainer. It's expensive but if they could help you figure out a plan that would work and keep you from feeling pain or reinjuring yourself it could be worth it. I need to take my own advice on this one. But I do think they help a lot.

The last thing I'd suggest is to set daily exercise goals but accomplish them in smaller spurts. So if you want to do 30 mins of exercise a day, then do 3 sets of 10 mins instead of doing it all at once. Take a 10 min walk. Do some calisthenics or light weight repetitions while you watch TV. It's more important to get the time in than to do it all at once.

Good luck! Ellen

My knees are pretty messed up from too much jogging when I was younger (jogging on hard surfaces with lousy shoes). So I can't jog anymore. Even walking very far is painful. My husband turned me on to bicycle riding and that has been great. I have to take Tylenol or and asprin before I go to keep down inflammation, but I ride about 10-11 miles now 2-3x/wk in my hilly neighborhood and those surounding (took a while to work up to this!). I don't know the nature of your knee problems, but bicycling is worth a try.

Have you had surgery on your knee? Water excercise is great for the joints. See if you have a hospital in your area that does free classes for those who need to be easy on there joints. Like maybe for Arthritus support groups.

I was a professional dancer for many years competing and such and I dislocated my knee cap, pulled legiments, tendons, and such. I had orthroscopic surgery on knee. Doc told me I could never dance again. :(

He was wrong because many years later my knee is strong from excercise and continued dance. At times, I get a sharp dull pain in my knee from running also. Make sure your shoes are supportive when you walk. Also try leg lifts and floor excercise. Stretching a lot helps build the knee muscle...Hope some of this helps....S
