I could not agree with you more!! It amazes me how society is. I too see myself as some huge ginormous person, and I really dislike the fact that I do that. There are days that I feel differently, but most days that is how I feel. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week, and I see all these other women there, who are thin and so in shape...it is intimidating sometimes, but I dont let it get to me. I will never look like that, but I am doing my best to look my best. I still have alot of work to do, but I refuse to give up. I hit a plateau, then gained 10 lbs, got so frusterated, almost gave up....but didnt. It has taken me almost 3 months to get all but 4 lbs of that 10 off. I am still learning to be happy with who I am. I know that we all ( even thin women) have our daily struggles...but we need to stick together, and we will all get through it. I hope you all have a great day!!!!!

I'm glad someone else agrees with me.

My oldest daughter is and always has been on the thin side and her dad and family was stick thin type of people NONE Of them exercise, but you would think they do daily from looking at them.

People like me, exercise, eat right and control eating habits and losing/maintaining weight is difficult. Also, I have more of a body type that retains water and have more muscle, so that can be a difference.

I guess it's a perception of who is the person the receiving person is. I still think that the media as a whole since the early 80's has helped to discriminate and engrain our thoughts of what is "fat" and what is not. Just think if they had not pushed being so thin all this time what our world would be like.

We as "overweight" people may have had more places to exercise and socialize and we may have been a society where HEALTHY instead of "dying to be thin" was in :P

That's the essence of it. Be healthy. If we all thought more about being as healthy as possible, I think this obsession with fatness and overweightness would be less. I think we may be thinking too much about wanting not to be overweight. We are concentrating on not being fat.

Instead of thinking of not being fat and thinking of ourselves as out of shape and out of step with how we should be maybe we can adjust our attitudes to want to be as healthy as possible.

Did you see the movie or read "The Secret"?

That was one of the main points. If something is in our consciousness, then we bring it into being. For example, if we concentrate on the War Against Terrorism, we are manifesting terrorism.

Just a thought...
Jas

I agree with Jessie Lynn! Core Secrets were major for me. I got my Mama doing them and she is 240....so it can be done! Also walking and swimming are excellent for anyone!

Oh Jazzy that's so sad about your Mama! I wish they would have a class for people that have 100 pounds to lose... or atleast like 50..... something specific where it will be only people who are similar in their needs to lose a decent amount of weight..... and let the instructor be someone who has lost 50-100 pounds...that'd be inspiring I think!!

wow Jazzy that's awesome! It's horrible that they treated her that way because i'm sure she would have inspired alot of people to join jazzercise and lose lots of weight!! Very sad! That's cool that she opened her own gym.. i hope she's doing good with that!!

I agree wholeheartedly that there is not enough exercise routines/types out there for the obese and morbidly obese - and yes, I fit into that category with a whoppin 114 more to go.

The only issue I see with having a gym where its only available to big people, if you are exercising, you will eventually lose the weight. Do you get kicked out then? are you all the sudden the outcast because you have a body that fits "standards?" What does that do except turn the table against thin people rather than against heavy?

Instructors in a gym are generally going to be thin - mostly because they are experienced instructors and even if they ate McDonald's everyday. People who work at a gym normally take advantage of the working out aspect of their job and I would almost assume they would be more than encouraged to look healthy.

I personally would like to see a class geared for the morbidly obese and obese individuals so the comfort levels are there in the class so people feel better about being themselves and allowing the instructor to do his or her job regardless of their size. Sure its more motivational to have someone up there that looks like us or has looked like us, but I think I'm more interested in the qualifications to teach a course for the larger individuals.

I am with Ian about the airplanes - there is a lot that goes into the decision in making an obese person buy 2 seats rather than just one and it isn't for their comfort or to embarrass them. No one likes to be pointed out as fat, but we all must face the truth that if you are 300 pounds overweight - you are 300 pounds overweight and it does affect the physics of flight.

Fashion is a whole different story. Its not just the obese that get left out in the fashion industry - anyone who is not shaped like a 2 by 4 is left out or anyone who wants to not dress in the trendy, flesh-revealing styles that have taken over clothes racks in the last 10 years. Older women are left out, young girls are left out. Anyone with a body type that isn't in proportion is left out. Modern fashion is geared to one body type and that's about it. I think its a struggle for everyone else, not just the extremely overweight, to find something that looks good, fits right, and doesn't have some random decade from the past calling its name.

I suppose my first point was... if we all go there to be around larger people, eventually everyone isn't going to be large anymore and then the level of comfort is compromised for the new people coming in because there are now thinner people (the original large people) unless they move on.

I definitely understand that being healthy and looking healthy are two different things.
