You know, there are some great videos available that teach the basics--I would suggest that you practice around a mirror or reflective window just so that you can see yourself for the first couple of times--that's actually what I use. I don't have the money to belong to a gym, so I bellydance, do pilates, & tae-bo...and I have noticed a HUGE change in my body! Plus, the pilates helps with the bellydancing, and both help with the tae-bo (coordination stuff), and I never get bored, because I can choose from a bunch of different workout videos. :-) I hope that some of you gals get started...it's a great workout. Just search amazon.com for belly dancing workout videos, there are TONS!! :-)

thanks Brea - I have 2 left feet when it comes to dancing <clumsy as heck>

I was intrigued last year by this woman I met on my Lap Band board that did belly dancing as her main exercise. She was 250+ and she said it helped her alot, but I haven't gotten the courage to try it yet.

I'm going to get a video and try it to see if it helps and as a special treat for my husband on our wknd away at his reunion (if I don't break a leg before June lol)

As long as you don't have two left hips you should be fine :-) I think that you would have a really fun time with bellydancing...and you don't move your feet nearly as much as you move your hips and tummy (and arms). Another one you might try is hula...there are more foot movements, but not nearly as many as other dance forms. Let me know if decide to try it, K? :-)

Like Brea said...Pilates is amazing!!! I had to take a gym class and I heard all the hype about the celebrities doing it, so I thought I'd give it a try! It makes you sweat, you will be sore the next day...and you will see results! I even got my own pilates dvd for at home! If you do it for 3 times a week, you will notice a difference.
I too want to try belly dancing, but I think the place that does it costs an arm and a leg..gotta check it out.
Another thing for the belly fat..a trainer at the gym I sometimes (haha) frequent told me that the best way to burn fat is to run on the treadmill for a minute, then walk for a minute. Do this for 20 minutes. She said the reason is because you're making your heartbeat jump up and down..so I don't know, I have yet to go to the gym on a regular basis to find out!
OHHHHHHHH and the best of all! There's a thing I bought called a tummy belt. You can wear it under your clothes, and it makes you sweat tons. It kind of sucks the water weight out of your stomach for the time being, but it gives me motivation because I can see results right away, ya know? Anyway, you can get them at Walmart or target. But you have to remember that you NEED to drink water the whole time you are working out! There have been reports of boys that wrestle that have passed out because of wanting to drop weight really quickly because they skip drinking water to stay hydrated!

back in high school...i did pilates for dance class. you really benefit from self-strengthening excercises. it kept my body strong...back then when i was smaller, i always seen the bigger girls struggle...now i know how it feels. =/ but i do remember how easy it was for me to do situps and pushups consistently. when i was younger, it was important for me be in shape, i don't know how i got lost the years after. i'm still searching for that inner me that i lost in all the weight....a happier me.

Hey Ian! So if I understand what you are saying.... only cardio works off the belly fat? or should you combine cardio with situps or should you loose the weight first with cardio and then tone with situps?
