So I just joined a gym again for the summer since I'm home from school. I'm down 30 pounds since last April, and my goal is another 30 during the summer. I am a big boned boy and I use to weigh in at 263. I've never been a big belly fat kid or anything, but the next 30 pounds will surely make me feel very very happy. Also with the 30 pounds I hope comes a few more inches.

I'm 20 years old. I am in good health, I'm in the army, so I'm a very active person. However my father, my friends, and mother have noticed dark circles under my eyes. And my groin area is very itchy. I've read online this is the first signs of diabetes. Does anyone know? I'm going to see my doctor Tuesday for blood work. (P.S. diabetes does run in my family - my grandfather had it.)

Are you thirsty a lot? Or do you go to the bathroom a lot? These can be signs, too. Do you ever feel sick when you haven't eaten? Let us know what comes of it and good luck. Sometimes losing a little weight can manage diabetes on its own.

Well, that's the thing, I'm not thirsty all the time, I drink water all day long. The 8 glasses everyone recommends, and I don't pee excessively. I'm just messed up I guess, lol

Hmmmm....the symptoma alikatz mentioned are actually the first signs of diabetes-excessive thirst and urination, and weakness/dizziness when blood sugar gets low. You would feel constant, unquenchable thirst. Possibly an unexplainable drop in weight, followed by an unexplainable gain.
First off-I'm not a doctor, but I wanted to comment. Feel free to totally disregard the following
The dark circles under your eyes can be alot of things, but the most common problem has to do with allergies....the time of year, the fact that you're getting out more, etc would lead me to suspect that may be the case. My daughter gets them. The dr called them allergy eyes, but I'm sure there's a much more medical and scary sounding term for it-and he said it's actually very common.
The itchy groin I would probably relate to the fact that you are going to the gym more than your body is used to-a heat rash type thing from sweating, body heat, and friction from your clothes when you exercise.
Neither one of these have I ever heard of as being indicators of diabetes. The internet is sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse. We could all diagnose ourselves with diseases and syndromes in a fit of hypochondria a little too easily with the plethora of information available, mostly from people who have no idea what they are talking about
It's SO good that you are making a conscious effort to lose the weight, especially with a family history of diabetes. My father, my aunt, and my husband's mother ALL passed away from complications of diabetes. People with the hereditary tendency to blood sugar, insulin, and metabolic disorders should be especially aware of problems with weight.
Bravo on having it checked out....not everyone displays the textbook signs and symptoms for diabetes, and with a predisposal to it regular screenings aren't a bad idea anyway. Better safe and all that.
Best of luck with the medical tests, and with your weight loss goal! Keep us up to date on how it's all going!
Laura

Hi, Matty~you went to see the doctor. What did the doc think? Are you feeling okay? Some skin areas simply darken as we age...and men get yeast infections, too!
I think you are so smart to check it out.
P.S. My Dad was a career Army Bird. I loved the life.
