Finding the right exercise for yourself is the hard part. I have bone spurs in my left heel that really hurt, especially at the end of the day or if I don't wear the right shoes.
Have you ever tried using the Gazelle? It is low impact because you move your legs in the walking motion, but your feet never leave the machine and your knees never even really bend. I use it a lot and I love it. With your back problems, you could probably choose to use the arm handles, or not, depending on how your body handles that type of movement.
Otherwise I use the Wii EA Active a lot also....again, I can choose what movements my body can handle and still get a good workout. Try to find several things that work for you so that you can change what you are doing, also. Maybe you could search online for exercises that are back friendly, that is how I found the Gazelle, was searching for exercises easy on knees because of arthritis.
Once you find what works for you, you will really be able to feel the difference exercise can make in your life.
