Hey, I take 300 mg's of Wellbutrin too. I never had any problems. Wellbutrin alone gave me a little energy boost and appetite suppression.
I've never read anything in the monograph that said not to take Phen with Prozac, and I think some doctors prescribe it with Phen. I've read that here a few times. Don't worry about it, but you can call the Pharmacist and double check if you are.
Prozac is an selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, meaning that it basically prevents certain cells in your brain from absorbing serotonin so you have more serotonin floating around in your brain that another cell has more of an opportunity to absorb (I think of it as Hungry Hungry Hippos!)
Phentermine releases dopamine, epinephrine AKA Adrenalin, and norepinephrine. No Serotonin. Interestingly, Wellbutrin inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine---- Two of the catecholamines that Phen releases! To me, this means that taking Wellbutrin and Phen at the same time would be an excellent combination. One drug releases dopamine and norepinephrine, and the OTHER, which is a stimulant and increases energy and decreases appetite by it's self (The Wellbutrin, which is an analogue of the
diet pill Tenuate as well as Cathinone which is a schedule I stimulant!), prevents it from being reabsorbed so fast. To me, this sounds IDEAL so that you have more of both catecholamines in your brain at any given time compared to if you took Phentermine alone, which would do nothing to limit the reuptake of Dopamine and Norepinephrine.
Or I could be completely wrong and that would be bad for appetite control! I can tell you that Phen worked great for me for five months before I had to switch drugs, and I was taking (and still am) 300 mg's of Wellbutrin. By the way, you look like Celine Dion! If you don't like her, sorry, but I mean that as a compliment lol. I love Celine lol.
HeartofTXMom, IME, your problem was taking the
5-HTP along with the prozac, and not taking prozac with Phen. To me, it sounds like you had the beginning signs of serotonin syndrome---too much serotonin activity. 5-HTP is a precursor to Serotonin, and since you were taking an SSRI, you had too much serotonin in your brain at once. I believe you had the beginning stages of Serotonin Syndrome. It makes perfect sense, especially since you said you were fine taking Phen and Prozac at the same time UNTIL you added 5-HTP. Try benadryl or Valerian for sleep, or ask your doctor for a long-term sleeping pill like Rozerem or Hydroxyzine or something.
