Get a ball. You can work your abs, butt, and thighs on it. They're also cheaper than other equipment. I really enjoy using mine.

I too prefer the ball, I also go roller blading. I put my son in the stroller and push him round while roller blading and let me tell you it will work your butt, thighs, abs and all.. I do it every morning, and it seems to keep my lower body toned.. I also have a body bar, or body wond its a light weight bar probably no more then 20 pounds, I do arm work outs with it,and squats. Keep in mind i don't get to do all these work outs in one day due to me having a two year old, a nursing student, and a military wife. But if you start with the simple things the ball, and roller blading it should help with those problem areas.

There is nothing cheaper and convenient than walking or light jog outside around the block. I lost 30 lbs in almost 3 months by eating right and doing a walk/jog combo every night around my apartment complex.
Butl, I purchased an elliptical trainer for under $1,000 from Nordictrack and they broke it up in 5 payments without pulling any credit.

It is a great machine. I love it!

I forgot about the body bar, I have one of those too. You can use that with the ball like a bench press. With the ball you can also strengthen your back by doing backward situps.

The elliptical for me doesn't seem hard on the back or the kness, it is actually pretty smooth.
I got it because I could not jog anymore, too much on the knees and joints.
Also, it burns twice the calories of a treadmill, especially if you get the one I have with a ramp that allows you to do a climbing motion uphill. All the other suggestions are very good also. I am thinking of getting one of those bars.
Hope you find something that works for you!

Is the elliptical the one that glides back and forth? Like that gisselle thing with that crazy guy with the long hair on those infomercials? If it's the one I'm thinking of that I've used at the gym, I like it but it hurts my feet.
