I was just wondering if anyone could offer any information about phentermine and surgery? I am having breast reduction surgery next month June 23 and I didnt know how safe it is, my blood pressure is only slightly elevated the normal is 110/60 lately it is about 112/74 not too bad but my heart rate sometimes climbs to 99bpm while resting and I feel short of breath. I assume this is normal? Does anyone know what a safe high heart rate is? I have also drastically slowed down on my weight loss lately, II have been taking since 4/15 and lost 10lbs in about 7-10 days, now I have only lost 2lbs since. I dont eat very much and drink tons of water also exercising. Thanks for all replies in advance!

You need to call your doctors office. You really should have advised them prior to this that you were taking any meds if you haven't already. I'm not a doc but you eally might want to stop. Surgery has enough possibilities of complications alone without adding to it. By the way, good luck with the surgery!

I had surgery back in December and was instructed by my doctor to come off of the Phentermine 3 weeks prior to the surgery. He said the drug increases your heart rate and could interfere with the anethesia. I stopped them about 2 weeks and a few days prior to my surgery and had no problems at all. They also advised me about drugs that can interfere with blood clotting and told me to come off of those as well -- aspirin, vitamin E, etc. I know you hate to impede your weight loss, but you would probably be less anxious about your surgery if you come off of them ahead of time or at least check with your doctor. I honestly didn't notice that much difference in my appetite or energy level because the drug was probably still in my system until a few days prior to the surgery.

Good luck with your surgery. I know several women who have had this done and are thrilled with their results!

I was all prepped for surgery when the anesthesiologist asked me if I was on any medication. I said, only what my doctor already knows about, phentermine. He told me policy prevented him from giving me anesthesia within 2 weeks of taking phentermine. The surgery was canceled and I was devastated! (It's nerve racking to get physically and mentally ready for surgery and then have it canceled!)

Do not trust your doctor to catch this... inquire beforehand, or stop taking them to be safe.

I went in to pre-op today to get ready for my surgery. When the anesthesiologist found out I had taken my phentermine yesterday he canceled my surgery and told me I had to be off of it a full 14 days prior to surgery. That people were taking their phentermine and it reacts badly with the anesthesia whether local or a block or general. It causes your heart to race and then you can flat line. I also did research (google anesthesia and phentermine) it talks about bradycardia and hypotension problems with phentermine and anesthesia.
Please make sure you tell your anesthesiologist every medication you take. My doctor knew as well what I was taking and never said anything. His nurse even told me don't worry about it just don't tell the anesthesiologist about it cause you will have been off them for 4 days on the day of your surgery. I am taking the anesthesiologists advice. after all they know what they are talking about. It is their expertise.

Hi, Spiritfilledbabe! (So am I!)
That was great to read you had followed your anesthesiologist's advice. I am surprised the doctor and nurse's 'info machines' didn't pull up some sort of precautions. Sometimes they just don't work properly..

I am so glad you were upfront about it. When will your surgery be?
