Hi I am trying to find out if it is okay to take these two together??? I will be having my blood work done 8/13 and starting the phen. I only take 50mg a day of the Zoloft and a Zanax once in a while if I feel like I am having a panic attack.(all from stress)
I am sure my blood work will be fine and the doctor will give me the pills but that I might still have panic with them.
Any advise..

Thanks,
hopefulinfl

As long as the doctor knows you are taking Zoloft and Zanax I'm sure they will let you know if they are safe to take along with Phen. I know there are alot of members taking other meds and they are safe together. Just ask the doc first for your safety

Hi, Hope! It's important to find out whether these work together for you within the framework your doctor or pharmacist has in mind.
There are several places online to find how drugs work together, and you are doing well to find out! Here is what i came up with on www.drugs.com
Drug interaction results for the following 3 drug(s):
phentermine
alprazolam (Xanax)
sertraline (Zoloft)

Interactions between your selected drugs

phentermine and sertraline (Major Drug-Drug)
GENERALLY AVOID: Several case reports suggest that patients treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) may exhibit an increased sensitivity to sympathomimetic agents. The mechanism of interaction is unclear. The reaction has been reported when fluoxetine was used concomitantly with phentermine, amphetamine, or phenylpropanolamine. Additionally, some sympathomimetic agents (e.g., amphetamines) may possess serotonergic activity and should generally not be administered with SRIs because of the additive risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5-HT1A receptors. The interaction occurred in a patient treated with dexamphetamine approximately 2 weeks after the addition of venlafaxine. The medications were discontinued and the patient was given cyproheptadine for suspected serotonin syndrome, whereupon symptoms promptly resolved. A second episode occurred when dexamphetamine was subsequently resumed and citalopram added. The patient improved following cessation of citalopram on his own, and residual symptoms were successfully treated with cyproheptadine.

MANAGEMENT: In general, amphetamines and other sympathomimetic appetite suppressants should not be combined with serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Close monitoring for enhanced sympathomimetic effects is recommended if these agents must be used together. Patients should also be monitored for signs and symptoms of excessive serotonergic activity such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.

alprazolam and sertraline (Minor Drug-Drug)
Sertraline may increase plasma alprazolam concentrations by inhibiting its CYP450 3A4 metabolism. In healthy subjects, there were no pharmacokinetic changes and there were slight decreases in a driving simulation test score. The clinical significance is believed to be minor.

• There are 264 other drugs known to interact with phentermine
• There are 1315 other drugs known to interact with Xanax (alprazolam)
• There are 1696 other drugs known to interact with Zoloft (sertraline)

alprazolam (Moderate Drug-Food)
GENERALLY AVOID: The pharmacologic activity of oral midazolam, triazolam, and alprazolam may be increased if taken after drinking grapefruit juice. The proposed mechanism is CYP450 3A4 enzyme inhibition.

MANAGEMENT: The manufacturer recommends that grapefruit juice should not be taken with oral midazolam. Patients taking triazolam or alprazolam should be monitored for excessive sedation. Alternatively, the patient could consume orange juice which does not interact with these drugs.

sertraline (Moderate Drug-Food)
MONITOR: Grapefruit juice may increase the plasma concentrations of some orally administered drugs that are substrates of the CYP450 3A4 isoenzyme. The proposed mechanism is inhibition of CYP450 3A4-mediated first-pass metabolism in the gut wall by certain compounds present in grapefruits. The extent and clinical significance are unknown. Moreover, pharmacokinetic alterations associated with interactions involving grapefruit juice are often subject to a high degree of interpatient variability.

MANAGEMENT: Patients who regularly consume grapefruits and grapefruit juice should be monitored for adverse effects and altered plasma concentrations of drugs that are metabolized by CYP450 3A4. Grapefruits and grapefruit juice should be avoided if an interaction is suspected. Orange juice is not expected to interact with these drugs.

Thanks for all of your answers and the great post Susan. I found that this is actually Phen-Pro and that is Phentermine and a small dose any sertraline drug, Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, etc.
If you are monitored by your doctor it is supposed to help the affects of the Phentermine work better and longer. All of this information is on the Phen-Pro website which was mentioned on another thread and that is why I looked it up to see. Because I already take Zoloft I needed to know how they worked together. I guess we will find out and I will keep you posted.

Thanks,
Diana
