All the information I find about phentermine states that it is an appetite suppressant. My friend says that it also boosts your metabolism, that it's only function isn't to help you not feel hungry during the day. Which is right? Is the function of phentermine to help you suppress your appetite or does it also operate behind the scenes and boost your metabolism? I've never had a real problem with my appetite so I'm wondering if I even need to be taking the medication unless it is also helping me in other ways. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi, and though I (far and away!) don't have all the answers, here is my take:

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant. It works by helping to release certain chemicals in the brain that control appetite and satiation. It tricks your body into thinking it is satisfied with less food. It works a bit like an SSRI-antidepressant might by changing the actions of Serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRI like Prozac).

It helps folks when used short-term and with a new healthy eating plan and a bit of exercise DAILY. So, it's a great boost, but still needs you to exercise, diet, and change the way you eat....behavior modification.

It is also a metabolism booster in that many have 'nervous energy.' I have heard it said that a 3,000 square room house can be cleaned, top to bottom, in 15 minutes FLAT by some! Others report no energy boost at all, just a little 'umph' to get their willpower moving!

Many over the counters like Hoodia work a tiny bit in the brain, but mostly in the bloodstream, helping keep blood sugars (responsible for hunger sensations) evened out.
