Over the Counter Diet Pills Pulled

In October of 2011, the FDA put forth a recall and a warning involving approximately twenty brands of over the counter dietary supplements which are advertised to be natural weight loss aids. Some of these are also touted to be sexual enhancement supplements as well as body building supplements. Most are marketed as “all natural” and labeled as “100% Natural.”
These so called natural diet aids have been pulled for safety concerns, mainly that they contain a prescription drug that the FDA banned in October of 2010, Sibutramine. More commonly recognized in the United States as the diet aid Meridia (also known as Reductil and Sibutrek), this drug has been linked to heart attacks and strokes. It is a controlled substance known to increase blood pressure and pulse rate substantially and poses a significant risk to those with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke, and has been banned in Europe, China, India, the UK, Canada, and Australia as well.
These products are not only found in pill or capsule form, they are also sold as teas and coffees claiming to aid in quick weight loss.
For a complete list of the products being recalled, you can go to www.fda.gov. Some of the names included on the list are: A-Slim 100% Natural Slimming Capsules, P57 Hoodia, PhentaBurn Slimming Capsules, Pai You Guo Slim Tea, Lose Weight Coffee, and Acai Berry Soft Gel ABC. The FDA is asking consumers to stop use immediately and to throw away any remaining supplies of the products.
In addition to the presence of Sibutramine, some of the products have been discovered to contain Phenolphthalein, a solution used in chemical experiments and has been identified as a possible cancer causing agent. This ingredient is not approved in the United States either.
In addition to the dangers listed above, Sibutramine is known to interact adversely with a plethora of drugs both prescribed and over the counter, making it more of a danger to many unsuspecting users. It can also exacerbate other pre-existing conditions in consumers.
If you are currently taking any of the dietary supplements included on the FDA’s list, stop immediately and contact your doctor in order to be sure that you have not inadvertently compromised your health. For a safe over the counter weight loss pill try Phentramin-d
